Resin is becoming increasingly popular for jewelry making. It can be colored with transparent and opaque pigments. It can also be dyed in various colors. It is so distinctively that a variety of objects can be encapsulated into it. Using pre-made molds a wide range of objects can be made. Resin is a liquid that when mixed with a catalyst becomes solid. Many varieties exist with slightly different characteristics, catalyst ratios and working times. Resin jewelry are made mainly in the materials of Epoxy, polyurethane and polyester resins. Once you become aware of the properties of these resins you can then decide which type suits your needs. Resin jewelry mainly contains bracelets, brooches, earrings and necklaces in all shapes and colors. Using commercially made or home produced molds home jewelry makers can produce colorful original items. Two-part silicone rubber is readily available which allows the artist to make individual casing molds.

Photos, paper, fabric, flowers, metal, plastic, glass, glitter, candy, flowers, and many other things can be encased in resin. Resin can be combined with precious metal clay and other precious metals to produce lovely jewelry items. Resin is usually colored with pigment or other material such as shaved pastels, oil paint in some cases, even spices such as paprika, is used to produce original jewelry pieces. The introduction of epoxy paints, pastes, metallic, and pearl products that only require the addition of catalyst rather than a mix of epoxy, catalyst, and color pigment has simplified cold enameling. Gold, silver, precious metal clay as well as other metals can be enameled without needing to be kiln fired. Whatever resin material you use always read the Material Safety Data Sheets (MSDS), these sheets should accompany the product you are using. If not with your product request one from the maker or it may be available on their web site. Resin is safe and easy to use providing you follow normal safety guidelines.

When you know about how to make a resin jewelry, you would be addicted to the interesting process. Making resin jewelry is a fun hobby that requires just a few fairly inexpensive tools and supplies. The simplest technique for making resin jewelry involves using resin to embed an image in a bezel. While making, put your images in the bezels, mix the resin and the catalyst and cleaning out the bubbles in the resin are the most strategic steps.

First, set your images in each bezel and press them firmly to the bottom of the bezel. Ensure they are flat, completely cover the bottom of the bezel and they are not crooked.

Second, it is better for you to use small, graduated medicine cups (the kind you use to give medicine to children) for mixing resin. Pour the resin and the catalyst into a medicine cup in the proportions specified on the package. Stir slowly with a clean popsicle stick for two minutes. Do not stir quickly or you will create air bubbles.

Third, use a heat gun to get air bubbles out of resin. Briefly hold the heat gun just above the resin, and you’ll see tiny bubbles rise to the top and pop.
